Charlotte Walder - Education Director - RENU Training Academy

I started my hairdressing career when I left school at 16 when I attended County Training and carried out an NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing. I worked at a few salons situated in Shrewsbury town centre. In 2015 I started my career in Barbering and worked at a Barbers for approximately 3 years before leaving and joining the team here at RENU Training Academy.

I have worked at RENU for 5 years. I started out Teaching and Assessing NVQ Level 2 & 3 in hairdressing. Since starting I have successfully completed numerous courses and qualifications including my Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing, Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance, and I am working towards my Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice.

September 2023, I became Education Manager. Within this role I oversee all Hair, Beauty, Construction, Vehicle maintenance and Catering delivery within schools around Shropshire. Focusing predominantly on pre-16 learners.

Zoe Watkins - Vocational Tutor - RENU Training Academy

After leaving school I went to work in hospitality. I then started my family and had positions in schools as the work hours complemented my circumstances. Now my children are at an age where I can follow the career I always wanted to do.  
 
6 years ago, I started my journey into the hair industry, I became the apprentice at RENU Hair and Beauty, and I am now fully qualified and work as a stylist as well as teaching.

Currently, I am teaching learners who are at risk of becoming NEET. I also deliver NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing to post 16 learners. It is thoroughly enjoyable to see learners gain confidence as well as qualifications.  
 
I have achieved my Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, NVQ Level 2 Manicure Certificate, NVQ Level 2 Pedicure Certificate, Gel Nails Certificate and Level 3 Award in Education and Training. 

Jessica Szklarzewicz - Vocational Tutor - RENU Training Academy

I have been working in the beauty industry for 16 years, I hold a levels 2 and 3 qualifications in Beauty Therapy, I also went onto university and achieved my Level 5 teaching qualification. When I was carrying out this qualification, I did 2 years’ work experience within TCAT College, to gain teaching experience.

Since starting at RENU, I have also achieved my NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing and Level 3 Assessing Vocational Achievement . I am always eager to gain more knowledge and training which means I can then pass this onto my learners to further develop their skills. While working with RENU I have had experience working with VTCT Entry level 3, Level 1 Hair and Beauty qualifications and level 2 Beauty Apprenticeships. Presently, I am working within the schools delivering Hair and Beauty knowledge and skills to pre-16 learners.

Charlotte Harrison (Charlie) - Vocational Tutor - RENU Training Academy

I started my Hairdressing career when I left school at 16. I attended City of Wolverhampton College and completed my NVQ Level 1 and 2 in Hairdressing. I then went onto complete my NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Barbering. I worked in a salon situated in Shifnal for four years improving on my hairdressing skills. In 2014 I decided I wanted to follow my other interest of Barbering. I worked full time in a Barbers for 10 years. This is where I found my passion for teaching. At the end of 2023 an opportunity arose for me to join RENU Training Academy.

I am thoroughly enjoying my teaching. It is so rewarding delivering knowledge and skills to learners and seeing them achieve their goals. I have total job satisfaction to see learners grow and develop into confident individuals ready for the working world.

Since joining RENU I have completed my NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

Silvy Scott - Vocational Tutor - RENU Training Academy

When I left school, I went on to complete my A levels. I have an A level in English language and literature, I also have an A level in Art.

I am qualified in Level 2 and 3 Beauty Therapy and have worked as a nail technician for 9 years within a salon. I always ensure that I am keeping up with the latest trends and treatments within the Beauty industry.

I have worked in salons, spas and clinics. I love this industry and I have always wanted to become a tutor to pass on my knowledge, skills and passion. In 2023 I joined RENU to fulfill my passion in teaching, I am enjoying passing on my skills and knowledge and helping learners reach their goals.

I am currently working towards my Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

Molly Kinsey - Digital Marketing Apprentice - RENU Training Academy

After I finished school I went on to college to complete my A-Levels. I have three A-Levels, Graphic Communications, Photography and Sociology. 

I have always been very creative, through out my education I have completed multiple creative subjects and enjoyed every minute of them. Digital Marketing was a path that I decided to pursue because it allows me to use both my creative and analytical sides.

I have been in a variety of different jobs such as waitressing, retail and warehouse. Through the apprenticeship I am on, I will be awarded a Multi Channel Marketing certificate upon completion.

RENU Training Academy - Our Success Becomes Your Success

At RENU Training Academy we can also help you begin your training within the hair and beauty, construction oe vehicle maintenance industry, delivering professional and regulated training courses. We successfully train young people who are experiencing difficulties with their education. Our packages are bespoke, designed to meet the needs of the individual. 

If you are over 16 we also have Apprenticeship funding available or if you have decided now is the time for a change in career we have options available again subject to eligibility.

Our learners all develop their skills in a realistic working environment. We support people to value the key workplace skills of enthusiasm, self-motivation and independence. 

At RENU Training Academy, we can also help learners begin working towards their accreditation in Hairdressing, Beauty and Nail Art via the AQA Unit Award Scheme, with opportunities for embedding in core skills ‘or work towards completing their full NVQ qualification in Hair or Beauty.

All of the AQA work completed at RENU will help learners move onto a NVQ qualification or employment. Each training course take place in a friendly and professional environment, providing practical training with tutors that have over fourteen years of experience in the industry. We also deliver the AQA Unit Award Scheme for students within the care sector or PRU schools, offering an opportunity to learn new skills in the hair and beauty industry.

After successfully completing units from the AQA Award Scheme, we will assess the correct level NVQ your learner can progress to. We are proud to be able to offer this to our learners, encouraging them to continue being motivated and open to learning. With a nationally recognised qualification from VTCT, the countries leading awarding body for the Hair and Beauty Industry, your learner can gain access into college to further their career opportunities. 

We all understand learners can find working in a classroom daunting, which is why here at RENU we do the opposite. All learners are integrated with members of staff and clients, so they feel part of the team.

Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering includes:

• Contribute to the development of effective working.
• Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to Health and Safety.
• Shampoo and Condition hair.
• Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas.
• Assist with salon reception duties.
• Blow Dry Hair.

Our tutors have over 80 years of combined experience in the Hair and Beauty industry. They are here to guide and inspire you to help you reach your full potential. We will help you from day one of our journey to completing your Level 2 Diploma and onto your Level 3 Advanced Hairdressing. 

NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing

At Renu Training Academy we offer the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing in such a way it saves a lot of time in comparison to Further Education colleges. It's perfect for those looking for a career change or wanting to freshen up their skills when returning to the industry. Students can train and become a qualified Level 2 Hairdresser within 26 weeks on a part-time basis. 

This is made up of 8 mandatory units and a selection to suit your requirements. Mandatory units will cover:

• Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation.
• Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to Health and Safety. 
• Shampoo, Condition and treat the hair and scalp.
• Change hair colour.
• Advise and consult with clients.
• Style and finish hair.
• Set and dress hair.
• Cut hair.

Then upon a discussion with your tutor a decision will be made on what optional units to choose. Training and assessment will take place in our fully working hair and beauty salon on real clients.

Will I be required to do home study? 

Yes, as you learn your new skills you will need ot practice on friends and family. Written assignments and research will also need to be carried out in your own time. Here at RENU we believe quality time is the key to quality learning. Our class sizes are purposely kept small to keep this ethos. Our normal class sizes are 8 - 9 learners.

NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Ladies Hairdressing

Prerequisites: You will need to have completed the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing

Course Duration: 52 weeks

This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards for Hairdressing. You will complete your training in our commercial salon using the latest tools, equipment and techniques. You will complete mandatory units including:

• Monitor procedures to safely control work operations.
• Promote additional products or services to customers.
• Provide Hairdressing consultation services.
• Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques.

There are then a variety of optional units to choose from which include the following:

• Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business.
• Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.
• Color hair using a variety of techniques.
• Provide colour correction services.
• Creatively style and dress hair.

Assessment takes the form of observation of practical competence within the commercial salon; which is then backed up with written assignments and questioning to assess knowledge.

Practical assessments are completed on paying clients and must be completed within a commercially viable time as stated in the NVQ. 

Will I be required to study at home?

Yes. As you gain new skills you will need to practice on friends and family. Written assignments will need to be researched and completed at home as well as in the training centre.

How many students will there be in a class?

To provide quality training we believe in keeping classes small to provide quality training. Therefore, there will not be more than 8 - 9 learners at any one time. All of our courses are accredited by VTCT, enabling you to gain employement in the hairdressing sector.

Level 1 Certificate in Beauty Therapy

Are you interested in beginning a career in beauty therapy?

Why not start studying your level 1 NVQ with us, this qualification will include mandatory units of;

• Follow health and safety in the salon
• Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
• Providing basic manicure treatment
• Providing basic pedicure treatment
• Basic make up application
• Skin care
• Working with others in the hair and beauty sector

There will be then be an opportunity for you to choose other optional units to make up your qualification, this will be discussed with your tutor to complement your training, the optional units are; themed face painting, the art of photographic make up, nail art application, presenting a professional image in a salon, salon reception duties. 

Your training will take place in a fully commercial hair and beauty salon. Once level 1 is completed there will be an opportunity to progress onto your level 2 in beauty therapy.

NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy General.

• Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes.
• Carry out waxing services.
• Provide manicure services.
• Provide pedicure services.
• Develop and maintain effectiveness at work.
• Promote additional services and products to customers.
• Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce the risks to health and safety.
• Provide make-up services.
• Fulfil salon reception duties.

Training and assessment will take place in our fully working hair and beauty salon on real clients.

Will I be required to do home study?

Level 2 Barbering qualification.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber including: health and safety; client consultation; shampooing and conditioning hair; basic hair cutting; blow dry and finishing and cutting facial hair to shape. These units are all mandatory.

Learners will also develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: changing men's hair colour; creating basic patterns in hair; perming; reception duties and promoting products and services to clients. 

Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a qualification for those interested in a teaching career in further education or for those who have recently started teaching. It will enable the learner to enter teaching employment and progress on to broader teaching qualifications. This award is designed to equip a wide range of teachers/trainers and facilitators with the skills and knowledge required to fulfil a teaching role. This course covers preparation, planning and basic course design. They will also gain teaching delivery skills and participate in microteaching sessions. Evaluation skills and techniques also form part of the course content. This qualification provides a sound introduction to teaching/training and is suitable for both experienced practitioners who would like to secure a professionally recognised qualification as well as those new to teaching. This course can be delivered face to face or online depending on circumstances. 

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

The primary outcome of the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is to prepare you to enter the specific sector of education and training as a vocational assessor. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of an assessor. The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is a substantial qualification that will prepare you for a career as a vocational assessor. This qualification is designed for learners over 19 and will support you to gain employment as a vocational assessor. The units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role.

It is a practical qualification intended for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment, and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the workplace e.g. training environment. Entry onto this qualification will require you to have full competence in the vocational subject area that you will be assessing and you will need access to a cohort of learners, so that you can gather evidence of real assessments.

This qualification includes units covering the principles and practices of assessment, assessing learners' occupational competence in the work place and assessing vocational skills, and knowledge and understanding of education and training. 

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a qualification designed to enable you to develop practical teaching skills. It will enable you to work in a teaching role and progress on to a broader teaching qualification. This qualification is suitable for trainee teachers, those experienced in a teaching role and those working as assessors who wish to gain a teaching qualification. This qualification has been specifically designed for trainers aged 19 and over. This certificate is designed to equip a wide range of teachers/trainers and facilitators with the skills and knowledge required to fulfil a teaching role. The course content covers planning, delivery, assessment and the use of resources. You will also gain teaching delivery skills and participate in microteaching sessions, evaluation skills and techniques also form part of the course content. This qualification provides a sound introduction to teaching/training and is suitable for both experienced practitioners who would like to secure a professionally recognised qualification as well as those new to teaching. 

Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice.

The VTCT Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is a practical-based qualification intended for those who maintain the quality of assessment from within an organisation or assessment centre. The qualification is made up of two units giving the teacher/trainer the knowledge and practical skills to carry out the process of internal quality assurance. The cost of this qualification is £400.

Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice.

The level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is a practical-based qualification intended for those leading a team of internal quality assurance staff. Within the qualification you will complete a mixture of theory and practical tasks to gain the required skills to lead an internal quality assurance team. 

The Unit Award Scheme is ideal for any learner who has missed education for any reason. Our belief is anyone can be a learner w just need to find an interest. The Unit Award Scheme has over 10,000 different units to choose from whether it be Maths, English, Science, Hair or Beauty we will find the right course for your learner. We are not a ‘school’ we are a training academy and our learners love our ethos. We believe we are all in it together, with this in mind we all integrate together there is no ‘teacher’ and no ‘child’ we are all members of staff. Once our learners start achieving units this gives them pride and self-belief which in turn creates self-motivation. We know by promoting this we get great results and our working partners agree.

Gail currently runs a training academy in Shrewsbury delivering NVQ qualifications in hair and beauty. Charlotte is the post-16 co-ordinator within the organisation, we have good knowledge of in-depth training, along with the skills to be able to support people and deliver short courses alongside a great team of educators.

All our courses are accredited by ABT [associated Beauty Therapist] this will enable the student to gain the right qualification and obtain the correct insurance.
